I suppose I’d have more regard for cupcakes as a canvas for culinary art if I saw more of them that neither had a pile of pre-made confectionary in unnatural colours heaped on top, nor was decorated with sugarcraft and marzipan sculptures that looked no different to the art created by an infant with a packet of felt and blunt scissors.

As far as I understand, they’re basically fairycakes or muffins, topped with a layer of stuff that’s seemingly just margarine, sugar and food dye, and then decorated with mass-produced objects made of more sugar and more food dye, or rice paper printed with cartoon characters?
